What a Race Time Predictor Actually Does

A race time predictor takes a result you've already run and projects how you'd likely perform at a different distance, based on the fitness that result implies. This tool uses a recent race you've completed — anything from a 1-mile time trial to a full marathon — and it works out what that same underlying fitness would produce over 5K, 10K, half marathon, and marathon distances. It's not a guess pulled from a pace chart; it's a mathematical relationship between distance and endurance that's held up reasonably well across decades of race data, which is why it's still the model most online predictors and coaching plans lean on.

The Math Behind the Riegel Formula

The prediction is built on the Riegel formula, published by Pete Riegel in 1977: T2 = T1 × (D2/D1)^1.06. Here, T1 and D1 are the time and distance of the race you already ran, and T2 and D2 are the predicted time and target distance. The exponent, 1.06, is the part that makes this more than simple pace math — if endurance scaled perfectly linearly with distance, the exponent would be 1.0 and you could just multiply your pace by the new distance. Instead, Riegel found that runners slow down slightly more than linear scaling would predict as distance increases, because fatigue compounds over time. That 1.06 exponent captures this real-world slowdown, which is why a straight pace-per-mile calculation tends to be too optimistic for longer target distances, while the Riegel formula stays closer to what runners actually experience.

How to Use Your Predicted Times

The most useful way to read these numbers is as a fitness baseline, not a guaranteed outcome. If your predicted marathon time comes out to 3:45 based on a recent 10K, that's roughly what your current aerobic fitness supports on a similar course and similar conditions — assuming you also put in the distance-specific training a marathon requires. I'd use this calculator for three things in particular: setting a realistic goal pace before a race, checking whether a goal time you've picked is actually within reach given your recent fitness, and tracking whether your fitness is trending up over a training block by re-running the prediction from race to race. It's also a good sanity check against overly ambitious goal times pulled from a pace band chart without any recent race data behind them.

Where the Prediction Falls Short

The Riegel formula assumes your endurance scales proportionally across distances, but that assumption gets shakier the further apart the two distances are and the longer the target race gets. Predicting a marathon from a 5K, for instance, is a bigger stretch than predicting a 10K from a 5K, because the marathon introduces variables — glycogen depletion, fueling strategy, and the mental grind of three-plus hours of running — that a 5K simply doesn't test. Course terrain, elevation gain, heat, humidity, and even how evenly you paced your input race can all shift the real outcome away from the formula's output. Treat the prediction as a well-informed starting point rather than a promise, and adjust it based on how your target race's course and conditions compare to the one you used as input.
