The MET value is where cycling speed does its work: leisurely riding under 10 mph sits at 4.0 METs, moderate 10-12 mph pace jumps to 6.8, vigorous 12-14 mph riding hits 8.0, racing pace at 14-16 mph reaches 10.0, very fast 16-20 mph riding climbs to 12.0, and full racing effort above 20 mph tops out at 15.8 METs — nearly four times the leisurely rate. Because MET values scale with effort rather than distance, this calculator asks for your speed category and ride duration rather than distance, which keeps the formula honest: two riders covering the same 10 miles at different paces spend different amounts of time in the saddle and different effort levels, so their calorie totals diverge in exactly the way real physiology would predict.

What This Estimate Doesn't Account For

This calculator uses flat-road MET values, which means real-world factors can meaningfully shift your actual burn in either direction. Riding into a steady headwind, climbing hills, or switching from a smooth road bike to a mountain bike on loose or technical terrain all increase the muscular effort needed to hold a given speed, pushing your true calorie burn above the flat-road estimate. A strong tailwind, a long descent, or drafting behind other riders has the opposite effect, letting you cover ground with less effort than the MET value assumes. Bike type matters too — mountain biking at a given speed generally demands more energy than road cycling at that same speed, due to rougher surfaces and more frequent power changes. If your ride involved significant elevation gain, wind, or off-road terrain, treat this number as a reasonable floor rather than an exact figure, and consider bumping up to the next speed category if your effort felt noticeably harder than your GPS speed alone would suggest.
