The Formula and Why Pace Matters
The underlying math is: calories = MET × 3.5 × weight in kg ÷ 200 × duration in minutes. The MET values climb noticeably as pace increases — 8.3 at a 5 mph jog, 11.0 at 7 mph, and all the way up to 19.0 at a 12 mph sprint pace, more than double the easy-jog value. That's because faster running demands a higher rate of oxygen consumption per minute, not just more distance covered. This is also why, for the same duration, a faster pace burns noticeably more total calories than a slower one, even though the calories-per-mile figure changes more modestly between paces. Your body weight is the other major factor in the equation: heavier runners do more mechanical work moving the same distance, so the calculator multiplies the MET value directly by your weight in kilograms to personalize the estimate.
Reading Your Results and Putting Them to Use

What This Estimate Doesn't Account For
Like any MET-based calculation, this is a population-average estimate, not a lab-measured reading of your personal metabolism during that specific run. Trained runners tend to be more mechanically efficient and may burn slightly less than this estimate at a given pace, while less-conditioned runners often burn a bit more. The calculator also assumes level ground — running uphill, on soft trail surfaces, in sand, or into a strong headwind all add real energy cost that these flat-ground MET values don't capture, so treat the result as a conservative baseline on tougher terrain. Temperature, hydration status, and how evenly you held your pace throughout the run can also shift your actual burn. Use this number as a solid, research-grounded planning tool rather than an exact calorie ledger for a single session.
