What Your One Rep Max Actually Tells You
Your one rep max is the single heaviest load you can lift for one clean, complete repetition of a given exercise — bench press, squat, deadlift, or really any lift where "how strong am I" has a concrete answer. It's the reference point that most strength programs are built around, because prescribing "lift 80% of your max for 5 reps" scales automatically to every lifter in a room, regardless of how strong they individually are. This calculator is designed so you don't have to actually load the bar to failure and risk a missed lift to find that number. Instead, you plug in a weight and rep count from a set you've already completed with good form, and the calculator works backward to estimate your true max.
The Math Behind Epley and Brzycki
Both formulas are built on the same basic observation: as you add reps to a set, the weight you can move drops in a fairly predictable pattern. The Epley formula is 1RM = weight × (1 + reps/30), a simple linear model that assumes each additional rep costs a fixed fraction of your max. The Brzycki formula takes a slightly different shape: 1RM = weight ÷ (1.0278 − 0.0278 × reps), which curves a bit more aggressively as rep count rises. Neither formula is "correct" in an absolute sense — they're both regression models fit to real lifting data, and they agree closely at low rep counts (1-5) but start to diverge as reps increase. That's why this calculator shows both numbers individually, then averages them into a single blended estimate that tends to land closer to your actual max than either formula alone.
Putting the Percentage Table to Work
Knowing your 1RM by itself is mostly a curiosity — the real value comes from the percentage table, which converts that number into concrete training loads. Most programming philosophies map rep ranges to percentage zones: roughly 50-65% of 1RM for warm-ups and technique work, 65-80% for hypertrophy-focused sets in the 8-12 rep range, 80-90% for strength work in the 3-6 rep range, and 90-100% for near-maximal or competition-style singles and doubles. If your program calls for "working sets at 75%," you can read straight down the table to the exact weight to load, rather than doing the math on your own between sets. This is especially useful for percentage-based programs like 5/3/1, linear periodization blocks, or any plan that cycles intensity across weeks.
Where the Estimate Breaks Down
These formulas were built for and validated against relatively low rep ranges, and their accuracy degrades the further you push past that range. Once you're doing sets of 15, 20, or more reps, the number you get back says more about your muscular endurance and pacing than your true single-rep strength — fatigue, technique breakdown, and cardiovascular limits start to dominate the result in ways the formulas can't account for. If you want the most trustworthy estimate, use a set of 1 to 5 reps performed close to but not at technical failure. And remember this is still an estimate: individual factors like lift experience, muscle fiber composition, and how close you actually pushed the set to failure all shift the real number up or down. Use it to guide programming, not as a substitute for gradually testing your strength over time under a coach's or spotter's supervision.
