This calculator uses the same MET-based approach found across the exercise science literature: calories = (MET × 3.5 × weight in kg ÷ 200) × duration in minutes. The MET value is where swimming intensity comes into play. Light, leisurely laps sit at a MET of 6.0 — already higher than many land-based light activities, which reflects how much work water resistance demands even at an easy pace. Moderate freestyle laps climb to 8.3, vigorous or fast freestyle reaches 9.8, and butterfly or other very vigorous stroke work tops out at 11.0 METs, nearly double the leisurely rate. Once you have a calorie figure, the most practical next step is folding it into your daily totals — whether you're tracking toward a calorie deficit for weight loss or making sure you're eating enough to support a demanding swim schedule. Because swimming sessions are usually measured in time rather than distance for casual swimmers, this calculator asks for duration directly, which makes it easy to log after almost any pool session, lap count aside. If you swim several times a week, it's worth noting your typical intensity and session length so you get a realistic sense of your weekly exercise calorie contribution instead of guessing at a flat number every time.

What This Estimate Doesn't Capture

Stroke efficiency and technique matter more in swimming than in almost any other cardio activity, and this calculator can't measure either one. A swimmer who fights the water with poor form may burn more calories per lap than a smooth, efficient swimmer covering the same distance, simply because they're wasting energy on drag and inefficient movement — but they'll also tire faster and cover less total volume in a session. Water temperature, pool current in open water, and whether you're using fins or a pull buoy can also shift your real energy expenditure above or below what a MET-based estimate predicts. Because swimming is such a full-body, low-impact activity, treat this number as a solid planning estimate rather than a lab-measured value, and adjust your intensity selection based on how the session actually felt rather than your pace alone.
