Waist-to-Height Ratio: The Half-Your-Height Rule
Waist-to-height ratio (WHtR) is one of the simplest health metrics you can calculate, and it might also be one of the most useful. The math is nothing more than your waist circumference divided by your height, measured in the same units. If your waist is 34 inches and you're 68 inches tall, your WHtR is 0.50. That single number turns out to carry a surprising amount of information about your metabolic health, because it's really a proxy for how much fat you're carrying around your midsection relative to your body's overall scale.
The Science Behind the Ratio
The formula and risk thresholds I use here come from the "Ashwell method," developed by British researcher Margaret Ashwell, who spent years arguing that a simple ratio could outperform BMI as a screening tool. Her boundary conditions are what this calculator applies: below 0.40 is uncommon and generally reflects a very lean or underweight build, 0.40–0.49 is considered the healthy range, 0.50–0.59 represents increased risk, and 0.60 and above represents high risk. The reason this metric works so well is that it isolates central adiposity — fat stored around your abdomen and internal organs — which is far more metabolically active and dangerous than fat stored in your hips, thighs, or arms. Visceral fat releases inflammatory compounds and free fatty acids directly into circulation near your liver, which is part of why abdominal fat correlates so strongly with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and cardiovascular disease.
Why WHtR Often Beats BMI
Many researchers consider WHtR a better universal health-risk predictor than BMI because it works across height differences in a way BMI simply doesn't. BMI treats a 5'2" person and a 6'4" person with the same weight-to-height-squared ratio identically, but it says nothing about where that weight sits on the body. Two people can have the same BMI — one with a slim waist and muscular frame, the other carrying significant abdominal fat — and WHtR will tell them apart instantly, while BMI cannot. Because the "keep your waist below half your height" message applies almost universally, across sexes, most ethnic groups, and a wide age range, it's also easier to remember and communicate than a BMI chart with multiple categories and asterisks.
How to Use Your Result
Start by getting an accurate waist measurement — wrap a flexible tape measure around your body at the midpoint between the bottom of your ribcage and the top of your hip bone, roughly level with your belly button, and measure after a normal exhale without sucking in your stomach. Plug that number and your height into the calculator above and it will do the division and flag your risk category instantly. If you land in the "healthy" range, that's a good sign your abdominal fat is in a low-risk zone. If you land in "increased" or "high" risk, don't panic — it's a signal to focus on habits that specifically target visceral fat: a modest sustained calorie deficit, resistance training, adequate sleep, and stress management all measurably reduce abdominal fat over time, often before the number on the scale moves much at all.
Important Caveats
WHtR, like every anthropometric measurement, is a screening tool rather than a diagnostic one. It doesn't account for pregnancy, recent abdominal surgery, or significant bloating on the day you measure, all of which can temporarily skew your waist number. It also can't distinguish between subcutaneous belly fat (just under the skin) and visceral fat (around the organs) — imaging like a CT or DEXA scan is needed for that level of precision. Use your WHtR as one useful, low-effort data point alongside other markers like blood pressure, waist circumference alone, and blood work, and bring the full picture to a healthcare provider if your result falls in the increased or high-risk range.
